Kristie5_sm.jpg

Kristie was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, a small town on the east-side of the Big Island. Surrounded by the Pacific and paradise, she fell in love with nature, beauty and the arts. She pursued the fine arts at Cornish College of Arts in Seattle then finished her undergraduate studies at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles where she was the recipient of the Thesis Award.

She is a fourth generation Japanese American and a Hilo, Hawaii-based painter. Art is Kristie’s daily practice which explores the intimate and ephemeral qualities of humanity through abstract works that honor a sense of that which is greater than herself. Her work aims to touch the hearts of others and manages to make the personal universal through the eternal languages of beauty, connection and visual storytelling.

Kristie’s work resides in numerous collections and has been exhibited nationally in galleries in California and Hawaii, as well as internationally in Japan. Most recently her work has been installed at the Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii State Capitol Building on the island of Oahu and the she recently completed works for the Sheraton Maui at Kaanapali. Currently Kristie has a studio in Hilo and Los Angeles.

Artist statement

The ocean is familiar and diverse. It connects us and divides. My work reflects the ocean to represent the parallelism and connectivity of humanity. My latest body of work, Immersed, is inspired by these connections with water. I translate and abstract these spaces and relationships into borderless imagery and narratives through paint and photography.
